Collagen is a protein that provides structure and support to skin, muscles, bones, and connective tissues. As the human body ages, natural collagen production decreases. Decreased collagen production makes it harder for the body to grow new cells, replace dead skin cells, provide protective covering for organs, give structure and elasticity to skin, and clotting blood.
Causes
High-sugar diets, protein deficiency, UV exposure, age, and smoking are all factors that can lead to collagen loss. A loss of collagen can also contribute to joint pain, reduced bone density, gastrointestinal issues, weakened hair and nails, and reduced muscle mass.
