Atopic Dermatitis, otherwise known as eczema, is a chronic condition that results in dry, itchy, and inflamed skin. Although it is mostly present in children, eczema can occur at any age. Scratching the itchy skin leads to further irritation, swelling, crusting and scaling. Usually eczema will cycle through periods of both flare-ups and remissions.
Causes
Eczema is likely caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. It is exacerbated by irritants or allergens such as soaps, cosmetics, and environmental allergies, or psychological factors and mental health conditions such as stress, anxiety, and depression.
